PUNJAB TO SEEK CENTRAL HELP TO TAME SATLUJ AND SUAN RIVERS: SUKHBIR

The Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Mr.Sukhbir Singh Badal today said that the Punjab Government is requesting Union government to immediately sanction the comprehensive proposal to channelize Satluj and Suan rivers to save people of Sri Anandpur Sahib and other villages of Ropar District from the annual fury of swollen Satluj.
Talking to reporters after visiting flood hit areas of Ropar district including village Harsha Bela in Nangal and Lodhipur, Gazipur Bela and Chandpur Bela of Sri Anandpur Sahib. Mr. Badal said that it was unfortunate that the people living on the embankments of Satluj and Suan were suffering every year due to excess water released in them and it was imperative for Union Government to immediately sanction funds to channelize these rivers.
Empathizing with the flood hit peoples Mr. Badal said that the state government would fully support them in this hour of crisis and district administration have been issued instructions to provide immediate relief to the flood hit villages. He gave away a cheque of Rs. 1 lac to the family of Mr. Dalip Chand, who died in floods and announced a grant of Rs. 5 lac to village Chandpur Bela. Mr. Badal said that Rs. 22 lacs have been sanctioned to repair the gates of spillways of Ropar headworks.
Mr. Badal also visited the Lodhipur Bandh that was breached due to swollen Satluj and ordered immediate repair after the water recedes. Walking in knee deep water in the slush of muddy water, the young dynamic Deputy Chief Minister reached out to flood hit victims to listen to their problems and redress them on the spot.
Accompanied by Advisor to Chief Minister Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, Media Advisor to Chief Minister Mr. Harcharan Bains, Mr. D.S. Guru Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Chairman District Planning Committee Mr. Madan Mohan Mittal and Director Public Relations Mr. D.S.Mangat, the Deputy Chief Minister asked Deputy Commissioner Mr. A.S. Miglani to immediately depute one Police Officer and one civil officer equipped with wireless sets and mobile phones in each flood hit village to provide assistance to flood hit villages.
He asked the Deputy Commissioner to immediately opeartionalize 24 hour flood control rooms in the district to meet the distress calls of flood hit victims. The Deputy Chief Minister said that ration to each family in flood hit villages be provided on priority. It was decided to run langar in affected villages. The Deputy Commissioner was asked arrange green fodder for livestock in the villages.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that Medical teams and teams of Animal Husbandry department have already been stationed in the affected villages to vaccinate the people and domesticated animals to check the outbreak of any decease. Mr. Badal also paid obeisance at Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib, praying to Almighty to provide relief to flood hit victims of Punjab. He was bestowed with a robe of honour (Siropao) by Jathedar Sri Kesgarh Sahib Giani Tarlochan Singh.
